Sandplay is a psychological therapy and technique

Abstract

Sandplay is a psychological therapy and technique, which conveys the contents in one’s consciousness through the application of the symbolic meaning of non-language by utilizing the nonverbal but symbolic representation/meaning in a game’s way. The diverse themes in the sandplay games reflect the clients’ response methods and their psychological health status at that moment. Research in recent years has indicated that the use of defense mechanism by an individual is closely related to his psychological health and personality disorders. This thesis attempts to utilize the psychological analysis method to do a thorough investigation on the relation between the clients’ self-defense mechanism and the respective themes in the sandplay. The investigation will contribute to the understanding of the kinetic character of the client’s symptoms, as well as provides consultation/reference to the design of the psychological therapy’s strategy. Finally it may serve the clinical treatments and relative theory research. More importantly, it is still bank of this kind of investigation in our country’s sandplay therapy theory research. Furthermore, the presentation of the defensice themes in sandplay games is a supplementary contribution to the sandplay therapy theory.

This thesis elaborates the definition, development of self-defensive mechanism, and the classifications of subjects/themes in sandplay games. At the same time, this thesis applies a clinical method on 43 college students who play sandplay for the first time. With the assist of defensive mechanism measurement table, this thesis attempt to establish a regression equation between the self-defensive mechanism and the sandplay subjects.

The result finds that the regressive equation is outsanding on the prediction of traumatic subjects through the diverse defensive mechanisms. This illustrates that it’s effective to predict the traumatic subjects by making use of the diverse defensive mechanisms. Examination on the significance of the partial regression coefficient (PRC) finds/discovers that the PRC is outstanding between an immature defensive mechanism and a traumatic subject (P<.001). However, the regression equation is insignificant/non-outstanding on the prediction of a curable subject by applying diverse defensive mechanism.

It is found that the regression equation of a defensive subject is near significant(p=0.099)in a model input with all three arguments. A mature defensive mechanism has a significant PRC on a curable subject (P<.05), an immature defensive mechanism has a significant PRC on a defensive subject (P=.095).
